Connecting Maine STEM Industry and Afterschool Programs
The Million Girls Moonshot Maine STEM Learning Modules
Inspiration can happen at any age, and afterschool is a safe place where kids can be inspired! Do you know what STEM opportunities exist right here in Maine? As part of the Million Girls Moonshot STEM Initiative, we are working introduce more STEM activities in afterschool spaces so more girls have pathways to pursue STEM careers.
The learning modules on this site are designed to help afterschool professionals learn a little bit about many different areas of STEM (no prior knowledge or experience needed) as well as be introduced to the companies in Maine that have related STEM jobs. In each module you will find a video of a day in the life of a Maine science professional with a correlating hands-on activity, a positive youth development training, and resources.

Why are we offering STEM learning modules to afterschool professionals?
We like to think big picture and long term. Our STEM learning modules are a way for Maine afterschool professionals to become familiar with different areas of STEM and how they relate the greater picture of living in Maine. We hope that this site helps Maine’s afterschool professionals to feel more comfortable facilitating STEM actives in their afterschool space.

There is opportunity in Maine. Opportunities to learn, to grow, to become educated, and to have a well-paying career. STEM careers are plentiful. It is our hope that after spending time on this site, you will become aware of Maine based opportunities to share with the youth in your out-of-school-time programs.

12,230 Maine Children
participate in Stem In afterschool
According to the America After 3PM survey, 17,439 Maine children participate in an afterschool program and 12,230 children have opportunities to participate in STEM learning in those programs.
2,694 kids participated
in summer stem camps
STEM opportunities extend into the summer. Based on the 2019 America After 3PM summer data, 2,694 kids participated (1.4%) in summer STEM camps in Maine.
Afterschool programs reach populations traditionally underrepresented in STEM
Women and people of color are underrepresented in STEM professions. Nationally, parents of Black and Latinx students report that their child’s afterschool program offers STEM learning at higher rates than parents of White students. Girls have opportunities to participate in STEM learning at similar rates to boys.
